The Keeper of Stars by Buck Turner ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

"They say our lives are written in the stars, that our fate is predetermined. But after the life I’ve lived and the things I’ve seen, I can honestly say that we are the authors of our own destiny, endowed by the Almighty with the power to choose our own paths, and, when necessary, to rewrite the stars." Sometimes after spending time reading deep and difficult books, I just need to pick up something light and fluffy with characters that don't come fully to life but end up with a happy ending.  This is one of those books!

In 1950, Ellie was sent from Indiana to spend the summer with her aunt in Tennessee.  In her first few days there she meets Jack.  He's totally different from the boys she knows at home.  He loves being on the water - taking tourists on tours, fishing, and spending all of his free time outside.  She is in her first year of college and is the child of well-to-do parents who are very concerned with their place in society.  Jack and Ellie become friends very fast and soon they become more than friends.  They promise each other that they will stay in touch once she goes back to college and think that they have found their soulmate but once her mom drags her back home and she gets back to school, her feelings for him diminish.  Twelve years later, after Jack has fought in the war in Korea and Ellie has gotten her PhD and teaches astronomy in college, she receives a book in the mail.  It's the book that Jack wrote about their romance and it quickly brings back all of Ellie's feelings for Jack.  When her aunt dies and she returns to Tennessee, she wants to see Jack to see if he still feels the same way.  Will she find the truth and the love that will change both of their lives or was their romance too far in the past to re-ignite their love.

First off, the story reminded me a lot of The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks.  The instant friendship followed soon by them using the word love to describe their feeling seemed pretty quick. But overall,  it was a quick read with some interesting characters and a happily-ever-after ending and it was exactly the kind of book that I needed to read this week.
