Review: Bound to a Spy by Sharon Cullen

by MK French

Rose Turner had been sent to the court of Mary Queen of Scots in order to marry well. She, unfortunately, overhears men plotting to murder Mary's husband, as does the English spy Will Sheffield that Elizabeth had sent to Mary's court. As much as Will knows there are always sacrifices and casualties, he can't leave Rose alone at court.

Bound to a Spy
October 2017; Loveswept; ebook (258 pages)
romance, historical
This is the second novel in the "All The Queen's Spies" series, so it does mention a few characters from the prior book in the series. It's not necessary to have read Wed to a Spy (read my review), not to worry.

Rose is a very likable character, and she is very proactive even within the constraints of propriety and her time. It's very clear who the heroes of the story are, as well as the villains, so the suspense is less like a mystery but more a question of when the villainous characters will get their comeuppance. I cheered her on throughout the entire book and enjoyed the fact that her friends and family all rallied around her when it counted.

Will is almost too kind to be a spy, given that he feels sorry for Rose right away and tries to help her however he can. That sets him up as a good romantic hero, so it works out for the story very well.

Overall, this was a fun and quick read.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and golden retriever.
