The Coffin Maker by Breeann Allison ~ A Review

by MK French

Jesse Burns lives in the town of Gregor's Hollow and builds coffins in the shop his father used to work in until his disappearance. It's a quaint little town with many Victorian and Gothic touches, which attracts tourists. Death himself orders eight coffins to be built for his victims, who will be citizens of Gregor's Hollow. In exchange, Death will tell Jesse what happened to his father.

ebook, print (368 pages); fantasy
In this story, Death is a paranormal being that only collects the dead souls, and another entity called the Bringer is the one that causes the actual deaths. Death is a jerk, seeming to enjoy tormenting Jesse when he visits the workshop. Robin is an interesting character from the moment she mysteriously shows up, and it's easy to see why Jesse is drawn to her. He tries to investigate the Bringer and the string of illnesses in the town. He stumbles about the town with Robin, with various theories as to what is happening.

I really liked Jesse and his poor attempts at being a detective in his hometown. The town is filled with lots of wonderful characters and it really plays off of its spooky atmosphere. It was a very fun book to read, and it went really quickly. Even when the book came to an end, I wanted to keep reading about the townsfolk, the creative ways they approached problems, and find out what happened next to Jesse and Robin.
