Sue's 2019 Reading Plan

It's time to start thinking about reading plans for 2019.  I've read a lot of strong opinions recently from people who don't want to make plans because they only want to read for enjoyment to the other end of the spectrum to readers who want a regimented plan - like read a book with a green cover in April and read a book by a British author in May.  My reading plan falls somewhere in the middle. I like to keep track of how many books I read a year and I use Goodreads as well as a personal spreadsheet to track what I read. I also try to add a few items into my plans that expand my reading horizons.

NUMBER:  My Goodreads goal in 2018 was 150 books and I ended up reading 223 books. Being retired and not watching much TV are the reasons that I have so much time to read. My 2019 goal is again 150 books as I have a lot of travel planned for this year and won't have as much free time.

My other goals for the year are a bit more vague:

  • Read at least 8 non-fiction books.  I read 6 in 2018.
  • Read at least 4 classics.  I read 1 in 2018.
  • Read more books by male authors.  About 90% of my 2018 books were by female authors.
  • Try to read a couple of books that are outside my normal genres.

My last goal is going to be a tough one because I LOVE buying books. I need to start reading some of the unread books that are stacked all over my house.  I won't donate them because I haven't read them but I keep buying new books and leaving the old books piled up.

My stacks aren't quite this bad but they may be soon if I keep buying books!
