The busy holiday season is upon us, and if your go-to self-care escape is reading, short stories can be a great option to give you a quick time out without taking up too much of your already too little time. I'm super picky when it comes to short stories and I sometimes find police procedurals a bit boring, but I'm glad that I picked up Her Second Death by Melinda Leigh.

December 2021; Amazon Original Stories audio, ebook (47 pages); suspense |
I was not familiar with the Bree Taggert series but I see that there are already four books published in the series with another three books planned for release in 2022 and 2023. Her Second Death is a prequel to the series. If you are like me and haven't read any of the series, then this is a great introduction to the main character Bree Taggert. And if you are already a fan, then this is a bonus look into the start of her partnership with Dana Romano as a homicide detective.
I really liked the main character, and I think the dynamic between her and her partner will be great as the series progresses.
I don't know if it is because this is a short story or if this is the tone of the whole series, but it wasn't as much as a police procedural as I thought it would be (which is definitely a positive for me). It is more of a suspense story in the vein of Karen Rose (without the romance element - another positive for me).
Murder and a missing child might not seem like a great topic for the festive season we are in, but it actually can be a great palate cleanser. So if you are short on time and want something to take you away from the holidays for an hour or two, you should get this book.
