Both have terrible opinions of the other at the start of the book. Carlisle thinks Noelle was after Adam Rutherford's money, especially when he sees her going through jewelry to see what to pawn for the rent. Because he threw money at her and all but implied she'd have nothing to do with her son, she assumed he would be willing to do whatever it took to get Gil. That only solidified when Carlisle's men found her and there were kidnapping attempts in Europe. When Noelle returns to England with a close friend, posing as a French shop clerk, she's found again. The threat to Gil is still present, and soon the two realize they were completely misinformed about each other from the start, as well as physically attracted to each other.
We have some fun romantic tropes here, primarily that of enemies to lovers and "there was only one bed" along with the potential threat to Gil forcing them into close proximity. The more they learn about each other and the Rutherford family, the more they're drawn to each other. Danger escalates at the end, of course forcing them to examine their feelings and how much they need each other. We know they'll confess their love and marry, and it certainly helps that Carlisle actually likes Gil and enjoys being around him. They'll have their happily ever after with the mystery solved.
