Starry-Eyed Love by Helena Hunting
May 2022; Griffin; 978-1250861603 audio, ebook, print (352 pages); romantic comedy |
London Spark is newly single and not in the mood for dating. She'd rather work on business for Spark House than date, and months later CEO Jackson Holt walks into her business presentation for a partnership between companies. Of course, he's the one she turned down before, and now the two must work together. They do have a connection and take it further once the business side of things is concluded. But Jackson has his secrets and London is entangled with her sisters. What does she really want out of life?
If London sounds familiar, that's because she showed up in her sister Avery's story When Sparks Fly (read my review) Avery is juggling her wedding planning and the hotel events, one part of which stresses London out. She tries to handle the work of the Spark House, setting up relationships for future business, her Etsy shop, and then the relationship with Jackson. The two fall fast for each other, and I love their banter. Their chemistry is great, and they try to keep things professional even though they attend events in a decidedly romantic manner. I do love how Jackson tries to honor London's choices as much as possible, though it's also incredibly easy for him to do so when he has private jets and the ability to buy space or equipment whenever he wants. There's still the emotional work to be done before the happily ever after, and even the Spark sisters come to an agreement at the end of the book. I enjoyed seeing all of the pieces fall into place, and that even the side characters have growth.

A Daring Pursuit by Kate Bateman
May 2022; St. Martin's; 978-1250801609 audio, ebook, print (320 pages); Regency romance |
Carys Davies flaunts the fact that she skirts past society's rules, all the while hiding a secret that could ruin her reputation and that of her family. She tries to avoid getting a suitor to keep that secret, but family rival Tristan Montgomery sees past her facade. He accepts her mocking challenge to show her what she's missing from marriage, and what follows is a rivalry of an entirely different kind.
A Daring Pursuit is the second book of the Ruthless Rivals series, following A Reckless Match (read my review here). In that book, Madeline Montgomery and Gryffud Davies took their families' rivalry too seriously and wound up falling in love. Carys and Tristan are their siblings and will try to help make their parties a success. Tristan finds out Carys's secret early on in the book and takes it personally as a gentleman and as someone who didn't realize he had a crush on her for years. Carys had thought him handsome as well, of course, and the two engage in a battle of wits that they both enjoy. Of course, they love each other, and Tristan cares nothing for her secret. The waiting game in the story is how Carys' blackmail is resolved, and how the two of them reveal their feelings for each other.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
