I won a hardcover copy of Lies Sleeping back in 2019 but I haven't had a chance to read it. I was needing an audiobook as none of my holds were available so when I saw it available at my digital library I checked it out.
I don't think I realized that it was book 7, but then again I often pick up books in the middle of a series. Unfortunately, I don't think this book should be read without having read the previous books. There wasn't much backstory. Though when I read the first few chapters of the print copy I found there was a bit more explanation than I heard while listening to the audiobook. Also, looking at other reviews, it looks like the case with Faceless Man 2 is a continuation from at least the previous book in the series.
I'm not a huge fan of police procedurals but I thought having a wizard as a police detective could make for an interesting story. I think if I wasn't so lost that it would have been interesting, but I couldn't get into the story. Again, though I think if I had read any of the previous books I would have enjoyed this one more.
If you are a fan of the series or looking for a series where several books are available (9 books have been published - book 9 came out this past spring - plus there are several novellas), then I think you should definitely give this book/series a try. If I find myself without an audiobook, I would try this series from the beginning.
