Pecan Pie for Breakfast by Susan Schild
May 2022; Longleaf Pine Press; 978-1732824980 ebook, print (366 pages); southern fiction |
I've read all of Susan Schild's books and you can always depend on a wonderful story with strong women characters. She writes books about more mature women - women who have lived their lives but still have problems to deal with. Pecan Pie for Breakfast brings us Cricket, a 40ish woman who is still trying to figure out life. She loves her small town and the people who live there, she enjoys her business of providing caregivers to the elderly who need help, she has a fantastic friend, Honey, who is always there for her, and she is definitely a happy person. On the negative side, her husband left her with no explanation the year before and the lack of closure is affecting her ability to start dating again plus someone is stealing clients from her caregiving business.
Pecan Pie for Breakfast has everything it needs to be a great read - family, friendship, romance, and mystery. What more can you ask for to have a story that you don't want to put down until the end?.
Side note - I love my home state of North Carolina and this book is full of beautiful descriptions of the state. There are also mentions of places like Biltmore House. One of the destinations that I really liked reading about is the Liberty Antique Festival which is held just down the road from where I live.

An Azalea Lake Christmas by Susan Schild
October 2022; Longleaf Pine Press; 979-8986755700 ebook, print (280 pages); holiday romance |
Book Two in this series takes us back into the life of Cricket, a 40ish-year-old woman with her own company, good friends, and a fear of falling in love because she has trouble trusting men after her first husband walked out on her. She is an endearing character - basically happy with her life but she questions herself and her decisions and worries about life - just like most of us do.
Hank is rebuilding the house across the street from Cricket's and they have a budding romance. She's very unsure of herself and when Hank's ex arrives in town, she questions his feelings for her and wonders if Hank will go back to his ex. On top of that dilemma, she's been living in an apartment at her father's house and he is bringing his new wife and her parents back to live in his house so Cricket needs to find a place to move right away. She'd love to have a nice home on Azalea Lake but the prices on lakeside houses are well out of her range. When something unexpected happens in her life, she decides to move forward and find her own happiness.
I really enjoy Susan Schild's books. Most of her stories are about older women, living in small towns and working hard to create a happy life and find a happily-ever-after relationship. I really enjoyed this book and hope that the author brings us more books about Cricket in the future.
