Catherine Bybee is a new author to me and after looking at her list of books, I'm not sure why she never showed up on my radar. After reading All Our Tomorrows, I plan to check out some of her earlier books. This book was a romance but it was much more. The characters were well-written and believable and the plot was pretty exciting and kept me turning pages to find out if there would be a 'happily ever after' for two of the main characters.
When Chase and Alex Stone find out that their multi-billionaire father left all of his wealth and businesses to them after his sudden death, they are shocked. Their father had pretty much ignored the brother and sister after he divorced their mother. It's another shock when they find out that there is another heir, a half-brother to Chase and Alex. Of course, the dad left no information about how to find the brother but since none of the businesses can be sold or changed until he is found, it becomes a major search for them to find the brother before the end of the year. One of their biggest assets was Piper. She had been Mr. Stone's assistant for several years before he fired her several weeks before his sudden heart attack. When Chase offers her a significant raise, she agrees to work for him and help him find his brother before the media finds out. Will the working relationship between Chase and Piper develop into anything stronger? There are a lot of sparks between them but neither wants to do anything that will affect their working relationship plus they both have secrets that they are unwilling to share.
This is an interesting well-written story with several great characters. Sometimes it's serious and other times there are some scenes that made me laugh out loud. This book has it all -- a bit of suspense, an evil gold digger widow, a dog that wants to protect Piper, and a steamy romance. I enjoyed it and now that I've found this new author, I need to order some of her earlier books and series.
I didn't realize that this is the first book in a series until after I finished the book. Book 2 The Forgotten One will be published in November 2024.
