Spend the Summer on the Cape with Pamela Kelley's New Novel

by Donna Huber

Brooklyn-based Hannah is a bestselling author struggling to write her second book after personal losses. Her older sister, Sara, still lives in Chatham, Cape Cod, where they grew up, and is married with four children. Once a dedicated librarian, Sara dreams of reviving her love affair with literature, but instead, she is stuck with too many family responsibilities and a fizzling marriage.

I was really looking forward to reading Pamela Kelley's The Seaside Sisters after reading last year's summer book The Bookshop by the Bay. I started it right before I left on my vacation and worried that I wouldn't have time to read much during camp.

Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this book as much. I don't think I connected with the characters very much. The story is largely focused on Hannah who I felt might have been in her late 20s maybe early 30s. So maybe it is because I prefer books with an older protagonist. I would have liked to have seen more of Hannah's aunt Maddie as I really liked the sections that featured her. I liked Hannah's sister Sara more than I did Hannah, but I don't think I would have liked having more of her in the book.

I also didn't feel like there was a lot of tension in the book. The conflicts (if they can be called that) in the plot were easily solved and overall, the plot was pretty predictable.

It was a mindless read with an easy-to-follow plot and a small cast. So if you are on vacation with a lot of activity or interruptions then this would be a great book to read. It is easy to pick up and put down without losing the plot.
