Rosemary meets Ash at the farmer's market and is immediately taken not only with the botanical products she sells but with the woman herself. Ro hasn't ever felt this way about another woman, and it grows into an obsession.

Having finished her Ph. D. and an assistant professor of literature, Ro is in a desperate search for everyday magic and meaning as the book opens. She sees Ash with her stall and easy manner, wishing she could be like that. The connection she feels is instant, and reinforced by the way Ash's smiles seem wider around her than other regulars at the market. But Ash runs hot and cold, with boundaries that don't make sense in a regular relationship. Ash is stronger than she looks, with a farmer's sense of what makes the world work. Ro never really settled into her job or neighborhood, so she fixates on Ash's confidence and tries to find out everything about her, leading to the finale. It's a shocker after how bucolic the early parts of the book. It's definitely an interesting ending and makes you rethink everything that is revealed earlier in the novel.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
